Meet Dr. Rivero
Dr. José Rivero: focused training, calm presence, personal care.
Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Dr. Rivero earned his dental degree there and practiced before continuing his postgraduate training in the United States.
He completed two years in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the University of Connecticut, followed by a year with the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Jacobi Medical Center. He then completed a three-year Dental Anesthesiology residency at Jacobi Medical Center in collaboration with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, serving as Chief Resident during his second and part of his third year.
His residency included rotations in cardiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, pulmonology, adult and pediatric intensive care, and orofacial pain. He also provided anesthesia for patients with special needs at the Rose F. Kennedy Center.
Since 2020, Dr. Rivero has served as an attending at Saint Barnabas Hospital, teaching residents in Dental Anesthesiology, General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Surgery. He previously taught Periodontology residents at Columbia University.

What is a dentist anesthesiologist?
A dentist anesthesiologist is a dentist with advanced, residency-based training focused on anesthesia and patient monitoring for dental and oral procedures. Dr. Rivero completed a three-year Dental Anesthesiology residency.
What is the difference between sedation and general anesthesia?
Sedation exists on a continuum from mild relaxation through moderate and deep sedation. Under general anesthesia, a patient is fully unconscious. The appropriate level depends on the patient, medical history and planned procedure.
Is dental anesthesia safe?
Anesthesia care begins with a medical review and individualized plan. During treatment, the anesthesia provider continuously monitors the patient. Every procedure has risks; Dr. Rivero discusses the risks, benefits and alternatives that apply to the individual patient.
Who is a good candidate?
Anesthesia may help patients with dental anxiety or phobia, children who cannot comfortably complete treatment, people with special needs or complex medical conditions, and patients having extensive procedures. Candidacy is determined after a health-history review.
What happens before, during and after?
Before treatment, the team reviews health history, medications and instructions. During the procedure, anesthesia and monitoring are provided in the dental office. Afterward, the patient is observed during early recovery and receives discharge guidance.
Will I need someone to drive me home?
For many forms of sedation and for general anesthesia, a responsible adult must accompany the patient home and follow the post-anesthesia instructions. The team will confirm the specific requirements in advance.
Do you treat children?
Yes. Metropolitan Dental Anesthesia provides anesthesia care for both children and adults in dental offices.
Do you treat patients with special needs or complex medical conditions?
Yes, after an individualized review. Dr. Rivero’s training included dedicated anesthesia care for patients with special needs and hospital rotations across multiple medical specialties. Some patients may need coordination with their physicians or a hospital setting.
How does my dentist arrange anesthesia for my procedure?
Your dental office and Dr. Rivero coordinate the procedure, facility needs, health-history review, scheduling and patient instructions. Ask your dentist to begin the referral conversation.
